Stazione di Masserano
Museum | Castelletto Cervo | Piemonte | Italy
The "Stazione di Masserano" was a railway station on the Biella–Novara line in the municipality of Castelletto Cervo, Piedmont. It was opened on May 18, 1939 and remained operational until its closure in 2003.
History and Development
The station was established as a stopover on the line between Biella and Novara. It had a platform and a reception building in a rationalist style, spread over two floors. Due to its remote location, approximately 3 kilometers away from the nearest inhabited center, the station was not very practical for the local population. The nearest major station in Cossato was more accessible for commuters, contributing to the low usage of the station.
Closure and Current Condition
In 2003, the station was closed due to low usage and its impractical location. The reception building is currently inaccessible and in a state of decay. The surroundings are characterized by agricultural land, and the station is not easily visible from the road.
Significance and Heritage
Despite its short operating period, the "Stazione di Masserano" represents an interesting example of the development of the railway network in Piedmont in the 20th century. It reflects efforts to connect remote rural areas to urban centers, even though these efforts were not always successful due to geographical conditions and low population density.
